In vielen Fällen wird unser »nicht« mit einem Verbum im Lateinischen bl. durch ein Verbum ausgedrückt, z.B. nicht begreifen können, [1789] was etc., mirari, quid etc.: nicht wissen, ob etc., dubitare, utrum etc. – so auch unser »nicht mehr, nicht weiter«, s. mehr, weiter. In Fragenwird »nicht« ausgedrückt: a) durch annon, »etwa nicht«, wenn der Fragende sich in bezug auf Vorhergegangenes erkundigt, ob etwas etwa nicht stattfinde od. stattgefunden habe, obgleich er überzeugt ist, daß es der Fall sei, z.B. habe ich etwa nicht gesagt, daß es so kommen werde? annon dixi hoc futurum? – b) durch nonne, »denn nicht«, wenn man überführend, mit Überzeugung von der Richtigkeit seiner Behauptung. fragt, z.B. wie? ist der Hund nicht dem Wolf ähnlich? quid? canis nonne lupo similis? – oder auch z.B. bei Verben der Wahrnehmung, wenn man dem Gefragte zu verstehen geben will, daß er etw. wahrnehme, aber nicht darauf achte, z.B. du, der du glaubst, daß die Götter sich nicht um Menschliches bekümmern, bemerkst du nicht etc., tu, qui deosputashumananeglegere, nonne animadvertis etc.? – c) durch das enklit. ne, z.B. bei Verben der Wahrnehmung, wenn man nicht gewiß ist, ob der andere die Sache wahrnehme, od. wenn man glaubt, daß er sie nicht genug wahrnehme, z.B. siehst du nicht, wie bei Homer Nestor oft mit seinen Tugenden prahlt? videsne, ut apud Homerum saepissime Nestor de virtutibus suis praedicet? – d) durch non, wenn man glaubt, daß der andere die Sache gar nicht wahrnehme, z.B. du siehst nicht, mit wie großer Gefahr du etc.? non vides, quanto periculo etc.? – Doch steht non auch häufig in lebhafter Rede für nonne, z.B. ist es nicht eine Unsinnigkeit? non est amentia? – Noch ist zu bemerken, daß man auf annon oder nonne stets eine bejahende, auf ne u. non eine verneinende Antwort erwartet. – In fortgesetzten Fragesätzen wird das gemeinschaftlich fragende Wort, wenn es den Akzent hat, wiederholt, z.B. wurdest du nicht gerührt, als dir die Mutter die Knie umfaßte? nicht? commotus non es, cum tibi pedes mater amplexaretur? non es commotus?
